Hi everyone!
Just joined the forum and booked to go to Bus Stop 25.
We are fixing a 1976 pop top camper which (hopefully) might be ready for Valla. Sharing the Kombi with our 23year old son.
You might know us in SEQ. We are usually in our '60 cream and white Karmann Ghia.

G'day. Has anyone opened theirs up on the dash and documented it?
I wouldn't mind seeing some pics before I open up the dash to get the fan going.

  ANZAC DAY SERVICES
Posted by: ruby6689 - 09-04-2024, 11:19 AM - Forum: KombiClub Australia Bus Stop 2025 - Replies (6)

I have contacted the Elliott Heads Anzac Committee and they have both a Dawn Service at 5.40am and another one at 11.15am at Submarine lookout just a short stroll from the Caravan Park. They welcome anyone wishing to lay a wreath.

There is a Gunfire Breakfast and Two up at the Bowling Club 5min drive away.

I will post more details closer to the day but could you please let me know if you are wanting to lay a wreath so I can pass on your name and details.

We will make sure anything programmed for that day has time allocated for members to attend.

  Subaru Gearbox Conversions
Posted by: syncro - 04-04-2024, 02:52 PM - Forum: T3 Tech Clinic - Replies (11)

There has been a lot of posts in the US about the longevity of using Subaru boxes in Kombis/Beetles. This makes interesting reading.

The NEWS and the FACTS.
I received the independent testing results done by a certified testing facility. These guys test stuff for all kinds of industries including state agencies like NASA & other of the same caliber.
The results were the pinion gears were all with in original Subaru specs, while the ring gears all tested 58 to 59 which is also in specification, however when the teeth were tested they were soft measuring 53 to 54. When a harder gear like the pinion is driving a softer gear like the ring gear it will wear the teeth off like we have now seen mutiple pictures of. Softer gears are used in sports like drag racing and off road racing. They are done like that so that they can take high impact loads with out breaking. This comes at a price. The price of frequent replacements as they will wear out quickly.
Though the research and reading mutiple stories of how Subarugears r&p sets have failed either in a few thousand miles to lasting as long as around 20,000 miles it now makes sense. Todd gives out replacements to keep the people quiet so he can sell more. He may have to give out a few sets, but to every set he gives away he sells 5 more.
The facts do not stop there, the main fact that the ring gear is being driven on the cost side is the true root of the failures. The softness was done to allow them to last long enough to keep the business going. The ring and pinion can NOT be designed to drive the correct way in this transaxle. That is a fact that two well known transaxle engineers have stated. Therefor you make a part you know is going to fail and you make up excuses why it failed and hope people don't share their stories.
Sorry guys I honestly wish I had better news. You can not drive a ring and pinion backwards and expect it to last. Hard or soft, the ring and pinion made by Subarugears will fail. It may lose teeth, or ever break a pinion head off from deflection, and or blow out the side of the case as the ring and pinion try to go opposite directions due to the ramp side of the gears. It will fail it is only time.

  Bus Stop Wrap Up

Just arrived home from another fabulous Bus Stop. I know how hard it is to organise this event and all of our hats go off to Deb and Phil for pulling another one together.

We set off on Thursday 21st March and headed south for 2 nights at Werri Beach, down past Kiama. We left there on 24th March. Had a fabulous dinner at Geroa Fishermans Club - best seafood platter for 1 I have ever had!

Our next stop was Pretty Beach near Bawley Point. This is a National Park and it has powered sites but no water - the amenities are pretty good and there is a lot of wildlife in the campgrounds but the mozzies and flies can cart you away! It was my birthday so we had lunch in town at Ulladulla RSL.

We set off for Merimbula on Thursday 28th. We were so lucky to have perfect travelling weather and arrived in Merimbula, found the park and get set up in our corner of 3 ensuites - Leo (Weekender) next to us in his Syncro T3 and Nikki and Lee in their orange Devon Moonraker.

Friday night we got together at the camp kitchen for a welcome BBQ. Saturday was our cruise out to the Car Club and our photo shoot. We didn't cause too much traffic chaos in town and I think it went well. Saturday night was the gala dinner and so grateful the club had the courtesy bus - the catering was spot on. Well done to everyone that dressed up - lots of laughs. The announcement for next years Bus Stop was announced and a lot of people are already booked in.

Sunday afternoon was good fun with Alpal and his apprentice Col running the pull back races in the camp kitchen. Sunday evening at the camp kitchen as a get together to say goodbye to those leaving on Monday morning but we hung around until Tuesday morning. We set off and made our way back to Werri Beach again. The traffic was really only at Ulladulla although I think its always like that.

Last night was at Werri Beach and we set off to drive home via the Royal National Park. Surprisingly had a really smooth run through Sydney and arrived home this afternoon to unpack and wind down. Bring on next year!!
