Updated double relay for bay windows.
Posted by: T3lay - 27-03-2024, 04:49 PM - Forum: Bay Tech Clinic - No Replies

Hey fuel injected T2 owners ? How many of you recognise one of these little guys? This is the double relay which is mounted in the back left hand corner of your engine bay (if you have FI). Chances are you might not be aware of this unit, what it does or how it could leave you stranded. So a little information for you….
The double relay is used to provide power to the fuel pump on startup and a majority of the fuel injection system at all times. When it starts to fail it can cause hot and cold start issues and high idle. When it fails then your bus will not run without replacement (currently available from Mick Motors for $840.50).
I have had several of these fail and each time I was driving along, quite happy enjoying my bus when it just shut down. No spluttering or coughing, just dead. This lead to the tow truck on several occasions.
I’m happy to say that there is now a solution so that you’re not stranded waiting for a tow. I have developed the T3lay to have external relays so should one break, you can just plug a new one in and continue enjoying your bus. Feedback from current T3lay owners is that cold and hot starts are improved and generally their buses feel smoother with a T3lay installed.
There’s a big post explaining all about the T3lay and how to order in the new members section with all the info Smile

Hi from T3lay, the double relay replacement.
Posted by: T3lay - 22-03-2024, 02:47 PM - Forum: New Member Welcome - Replies (11)

Hey all Smile I thought I’d take a moment to introduce myself and a new VW product fresh to the market! Many of you might remember me as Dapom on the T3 forum on the original KC forum. I’ve developed a VW L-Jetronic double relay replacement which is available to order now! If you search for T3lay on Facebook then you will find the page. For those of you without Facebook, all the info is below for you Smile

G’day air cooled VW owners!

This story starts about 7 years ago shortly after i bought my bus, an 83 T3 running factory L-Jetronic fuel injection. The original double relay gave up early in my ownership…first tow truck! The next couple of second hand ones led to the tow truck too. I investigated what had failed on the VW double relay units and in every case it was the relay itself.  As the relays are not replaceable, the only solution was to buy another VW double relay.

At this point I decided to make my own replacement unit using standard, cheap and readily available 4 pin relays. The relays used are $10 at any auto parts store. If a relay did fail on my unit, a spare in my glovebox could be plugged in and I would be back on the road. It was ugly as there was no easy way to package the components but it didn’t let me down for over 6.5yrs.

About 6 months ago I decided to revisit the idea and produced some prototype T3lay’s utilising CAD and 3D printing technology. After extensive testing on various vehicles I am pleased to be able to offer the final production model T3lay for purchase.

A bit about the product

The housing for the T3lay is 3D printed in ABS plastic. On the bottom of the T3lay we have the VW pins to plug the VW double relay plugs into and the top accepts 2 standard 4 pin relays.

The T3lay replaces original VW/Bosch 11 pin and 13 pin double relays as installed to factory fuel injected Type 2 bay windows, beetles and T3 <84, the first universal unit available on the market.

The T3lay is supplied complete with 2 x 4 pin relays installed, meaning that all you need to do is simply unplug and unscrew the original double relay unit and then install the T3lay in its place!

T3lay delivered anywhere in Australia $250.

For any questions or to place an order, please send a DM.

Thanks for your support.

Chris

  Selling Vehicles Interstate
Posted by: syncro - 15-03-2024, 12:49 PM - Forum: Off Topic - Replies (28)

Be careful selling vehicles interstate because you cannot transfer the registered owner's details and Service NSW or Access Canberra will not help you.

I sold my Subaru on 19/1/24 and lodged a notice of disposal an Service NSW Mittagong on 22/1/24. Luckily I did this at a Service NSW and not by post or online as I have proof of lodgement.

The Subaru was caught by a speed camera 7/3/24 and I received an infringement notice 11/3/24. I called Access Canberra and they said that they couldn't guarantee that I wouldn't have to go to court and to submit a declaration online. There really isn't a suitable category for "not the owner of the vehicle". I also contacted Services NSW so that I can get some written confirmation that I am not the registered owner of the vehicle and they have made an error. They are also less than helpful.

Hello from uniWerks Design in the USA! :-)

Hello all

Chris here after accepting an invite to join by Grant (thank you!!). I have a 3D printing company in Buffalo, NY, USA that make no longer available and custom parts for vintage VW, Porsche and other vehicles. I am very happy to be shipping to Australia and around the world fairly often.

My VW Van journey started 17 years ago when i bought my 1985 Wolfsburg Westy Weekender. I worked of a medical device manufacturer for 15 years and man named on 5 US Patents for plastic part design used in medical devices. 7 years ago they restructured the engineering dept and I was one of the ones on layoff. That's when i started my own company. :-) My clever designs and attention to detail quickly started to get noticed. My little one man show of a company keeps me busy and is an outlet for my creativity.

I do custom jobs for people all of the time. If you have any questions or would like one of my products (or have your own idea for one) please email me to chat: chris@uniwerksdesign.com
