Chassis Numbers
#1
Hi. Brand new to this forum. Just purchased a 1972 Kombi for restoration and trying to correctly identify the bus. I have found and interpreted the chassis and engine numbers but have found another number (above the chassis number in image) on the shroud of the engine which I can't find reference to anywhere. Can anyone tell me what it means? Thanks in advance

It's the Australian prefix numbers on kombi's that where assembled in Australia.
The first two prefix indicates that it's a kombi van ,
The (4) prefix indicates it's a RHD kombi with sliding door on LHS of Kombi.
The rest of the numbers indicate how many where made to date.
72 Kombi Microbus
72 Kombi Van
72 Kombi DC Ute
76 Kombi SC Ute

It's the third number in the sequence, so yours is 228 would make it a 78 model.

Thanks Wayne that’s what I thought.  So years ago when I wrote away to Volkswagen why did the certification of production came  back as build date 1977 and delivery date 1977, I can only assume this is an error .

European summer holidays.

In August, whilst the production staff are all on their annual summer holidays, they retool and reset the production line, for next years model.

The 1978 model was produced from late August 1977 to end of July 1978……..

Today you can buy an MY23 Subaru, Toyota etc but it is still 2022.
