Advice please - wheel size fit for T2
#1
Hi all- question following on from the new bus pics over at ‘members rides’.

I will try the fit at a much later stage in person (overseas, not coming back in near future) but generally does anyone have their finger on wheel fit dimensions on a T2? I have a set of Ronal R9 (16x7, ET23) fitted with 225/60 Pirelli Cinturato - meant to fit to my T3 but with bigger brake kit there is interference so currently stored.

Has anyone fit 16 inch wheels under their bus? Any interference points that might prevent safe operation?

The bus may have been lowered a bit also, from what the previous owner said.

I've never fitted 16" wheels ,only done 15" but My 15" are still x 7 and the ET 35 instead of your ET 23.
The biggest issue I can see is that your wheels will be sticking out 12mm further out then mine, which means your wheel/tyre will be really close to the wheel arch lips on the back wheels.
This all depends on how far the tyre is bulging past the wheel rim, and or how much work they did on the wheel arch lip ,to know whether it's been bend inwards or outwards during the restoration. The only other is since it's been lowered does that cause the back end squatted outwards being lowered ,if you know what I mean. causing any issues! just a thought!
Again there are a lot a variants in to why it may or not work, I worked it out you have roughly 6-8 mm clearance from the lip of wheel arc lip and again depends on some of the above to exactly how much.
I measured my fathers car it has 25mm clearance and my car has the same wheel it has only 20mm due to the extensive work my car has had done during restoration compared to my fathers car that is in original location pretty much.

The diameter doesn’t matter, it’s the ET (offset) and width that count.

I reckon you might have some issues

A 7” with an ET of 35 should work be ok-ish as long as you are not lowered.
I run 17” x 7” ET 40 on a lowered T3
The rears are OK, but the fronts can grab on the lips depending on the tyre.
Pretty sure I run a 195 tyre.
A 225 on a 23 ET and a 60 series is pretty wide and big

I use to run 16” x 6” ET 50 and they were a bit “too far” in.
Fit was perfect but the “cap” pushed the wheel centre cap a bit.
6” x 45 would have been better

What tyres are you planning on running?

I will check what I am running

So that is a very interesting question, and the exact reason I am in this situation.

The Ronals are 16x7 ET23. I got the 16s to (I thought) fully clear the Go Westy brakes. Wrong.

The wheels I got are the Go Westy 15 x 7 ET23. https://gowesty.com/products/15-7-alloy-...6667176101

I didn’t get the GW 16x7 as GE notes they can rub tyre on body. They fit fine and made sure they did before ordering by a call to GW to confirm.

Turns out the inside profile is really important…the GWs are a fairly flat face (and flat inner) and the Ronals are drop lip (so more sculpted inside). It is the inside shape that fouls against the brake…

If I can reduce the image size I will send a pic of both.

I have the tyres already fitted (didn’t expect that fit problem with the T3 so went ahead) - Pirelli Cinturato P6 225/60 r16 (102v). They would have otherwise fit the DoKa (if they cleared the big brakes) as I now have 217/70 R15 Toyo’s on there. They are pretty beefy!

Thank you all for the responses below- greatly appreciated. It would appear to be ‘it depends’ and dependent on a number of variables…but a ‘possibly not’! A trial scenario with a competent wheel fitter when I get home. Car is stored in Lidcombe so I saw Tyrepower Mortlake mentioned in another post.

Add to that, the rolling total outside diameter of the wheel and tyre, also needs to be quite close to a stock VW wheel, to not upset the speedo and odometer readings………or just take that issue into account, & be aware whilst driving.

If you mean Mortlake, it’s Tyresmart.
Paul, the proprietor, is very good.
