I didn't have one before and just checking how they are meant to be mounted. It looks like they attach to the tinware under the fan as that is how most of the holes line up (except the right one grrrrrr). Is this correct ?

that's certainly how they fit. Is it just an aluminium panel?
The factory ones were three layers, steel top and bottom but a heat resistant material in between (asbestos??)
They worked well, but the matting in between absorbed moisture caused them to rust out. They were also quite heavy!
The one i bought is a single layer of quite solid steel. Certainly lacking any insulation. It provides an air gap only. Our previous engine didn’t even have one.

Yes, the original one was asbestos inside, and Type IV should all have one as it reduces the heat being radiated on to the tin ware and being drawn in by the cooling fan.
I would suggest a heavy steel one would be ok, but once heated may be less effective that the original, but still a way ahead of not having one at all.
