Non Kombi holiday in NZ
#1
Been in Auckland and surrounds for a week and one T3 and a Beetle in a museum have been all we have seen. They must be around somewhere.

We have moved from a 12 seater Hiace bus to a 6 sleeper Mercedes camper and are travelling for this week to the south. Bit different to our usual holidays.  Missing the kombi (and having only 2 of us) but the Mercedes is not too bad to drive.

I have to admit $100 for a night in a caravan park with power and no water/drainage, even with 3 extra people seems a bit rich for the middle of winter. And the 8c a kilometre charge for diesel tax on top of the fuel cost is a good winner for the govt.

See how we go for the rest of the week.

We spent our 3 week honeymoon touring NZ - both islands - in a Hi-Ace camper back in '81......had a fabulous time but the fuel costs were mind blowing !
Retrospectively, we thought that using a more fuel efficient car to get around and staying in cabins would've been about the same cost and a lot more time efficient... Big Grin
I'm sure the vehicles have improved but the running and site costs appear to have continued to rise.

Put it all behind you Adrian, enjoy the scenery....NZ is a beautiful place with so. much to see and do. Cool
Cheers,
Mark

We have had a great time looking about the North Island, but only one Bay in a museum! For the amount  of people in our crew (5) the camper, even with the extra diesel tax and expensive caravan parks, was a no brainer compared with 2 rooms and a car with enough capacity for us and luggage. We had 8 to begin with for the week of the wedding so a 12 seater bus and 2 cabins was much cheaper than every other option, but the second week lugging baggage to different places each night wasn’t practical.

Got to say for such a big vehicle they are quite enjoyable to drive. Bit big for an every day drive and hopeless in a city but country driving at kombi speed is quite ok.

I haven’t got a lot of internet capacity atm so pics will have to wait a few more days.
