Ignoring the likes of Tinker Bell and gender preference descriptives, the fairies are really elves. Both are described as supernatural creatures in human form but often mischievous. It is true that their rides eventually fade as horses don't live forever.

Don't tell anyone , but those beautiful butterflies you see in the garden are fairies in disguise, really, I know this because my granddaughter told me so.
