Filling Seams Before Painting
#1
Question from Klaus:

Hi All,

I have gaps between panels and wish to touch up spray paint.
What can I use to fill the missing filler ?
It needs to be able to be painted .

Your thoughts please......
Regards
Klaus

(bloody hard to read though)

Sikaflex 11FC or sikaflex 221

3M have this

Def.  Sika products but let them cure / shrink back before painting…..
Many paint too soon after filling and as the sealant shrinks back, ( and it will), the paint cracks.

....and from Col:

As Mark said.

  1. Clean out all old sealant.
  2. If any rust fold a piece of sandpaper , about 100 grit, and clean to bright metal.
  3. If rust in the join , hit it with a rust converter.
  4. Then aerosol can of Penetrol with extension straw ..... spray into seam.
Do this at least twice with 24hr between applications.
     5. Remove excess with rag and turps or wax n grease remover.
Minimum 24 hr penetrol cure before sealant.
     6. Apply a vinyl masking tape to inside edge of the join radius.
     7. Apply fine bead ensuring full contact and seal into just the join.
         Don't spread it.

Use any full curing sika urethane sealant as mentioned in prior posts.
Allow a day to cure and shrink.
Prime and topcoat.
