If the spring has lost its compressive quality, why not just replace the spring ?
....just curious....

That's why I asked the question. Don't want to do more than needed
.

Hi Brains Trust,
Does the steering column need to come out to replace the column/steering box coupling or can it be replaced whilst the steering box is being replaced?
Thanks & Cheers

No, you can replace the coupling without removing the box, there is movement in the shaft enough to get the coupling out and in.
Caution! make sure you are aware where centre of the box is when undoing the four bolts, two on box to coupler and two from coupler to steering shaft. As to undo all bolts you will need to rotate the coupler so you can get spanner on all the bolts. Also make sure steering wheel horizontal cross bar remain straight after you finish. Some real OCD comes into play if you are driving around and your horizontal bar on steering wheel is at 5 degrees off centre.
Also make sure your horn wire is put back into the same location, so it works after you finish.
I agree with Oldman with replacing the spring 37 and replace 36 as well. Check the chart as you pull it apart to make sure everything is their. As you know you can by a new bearing, getting the old out and the new in might be on the difficult list to do and JK do a bush which you may already have. Don't think you'll need them if 37 and 36 are replaced.
You may have a different circumstance then what I'm thing it should be.
