Dropped Sliding Door Handle....... - Oldman - 06-12-2023

Hi all,
The slider handle on my late bay drops from horizontal when the door is opened.
It sits correctly when the slider is shut.
It used to stay horizontal when the door was open.
I'm guessing that an internal spring has let go.
Spent time yesterday removing the door card and lock mechanism to see if I could repair it...
Nup, they're a sealed, rivetted unit and didn't want to start drilling out rivets if theres not a fix.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has a fix for this issue ?
Or, failing a fix.......does anyone have a good 2nd hand unit they'd part with ?
(It messes with my OCD that the handle isn't sitting properly when the door is open....) Big Grin
Everything else operates as it should.
Thanks

Hi Les, thanks mate.  Cool
......it's the mechanism that the handle fits into that I'm after.....but happy to buy the lot as a bundle if it works for you.

Mark I was sure that I had a lock and handle but I went through the boxes this afternoon with no success. I will have another look and if I do find them I will let you know.
Cheers. Les

Guess it's one of the lower 2 springs. Cover off to discover?
Sounds like a 'lost cause' Mark :-(. Job for the brave but just one spring! Thanks Doob!
Has taught me what is valuable out of a wreck/rusty Kombi!

grind the rivets flat
disassemble, fix the spring
reassemble with a clamp
use your welding skills to spot the rivets back on to the cover

I had this problem and did the above in 2017
still works great

The photos of the dismantled sliding door lock mechanism I gave in the previous thread
https://kombiclubaustralia.com/showthread.php?tid=721
was for my 1971 Kombi. I think (not sure ?) the sliding door locking system change in 1973? - So my description of the process may not be valid for later Bays.
Having dismantled, repaired & reassembled the lock mechanism once - I would be confident to give it a go again - but it is a very fiddly job.
I was just lucky that the failed pin in my lock was fairly easy to replace.

However I did have a full back up spare unit on hand ...just in case

Cheers
Grant

Many thanks Rick.....
That's the sort of advice what I was hoping to hear.  Cool
I'll let the maelstrom of Christmas pass and then put up a repair thread with pics.

Thanks Grant....yes, the later Bays are a different system to early Bays but essentially all locks work on a similar principle.
My son's '71 has a different mech. again !!
