2litre gear box 1800 engine - Monkey - 20-10-2024

Hey guys could be a silly question but I have a 73 bay window with a 1800 motor and was told if I put a 2 litre gear box in it it would be a better ratio and I would get more power ? Anyone heard of this or have any advice. If it is better is it a straight swap over?  Thanks in advances

Whilst the 6 rib 2L gearbox is a good choice there is a whole world of effort (pain?) changing clutches, flywheel and starter motors.

Better - probably

More power - no. Your motor is the same. But better gear ratios

Simple - mmmm….. not really

Cheap - no

Might be easier getting your 5 rib rebuilt to 6 rib ratios?

Oh….. no such thing as a silly question

What type of gearbox you got know in it, as you have an 1800 motor doesn't mean you have an 1800 gearbox?!

Hello,

all of the dimensions changed in 8/1975 from type 002 to the 091 gearboxes (only 15mm in total, but some parts are shorter, others longer) - so there is no easy exchange. it is possible, but not plug'n play. You need to mix parts so the gearbox fitting somehow in your bus.

So I expect you have a CM for the 1.8L type 4 with 4,857 ratio.
A CE for the smaller 1.6L type 1 engine with a 5,375 or later 8/73 5,428.
My late 2L type 4 with CP gearbox have a 4,571 ratio - is not a racer or good for hill climbs, but good for high way - often quieter due to some lower engine rotation speed.

good luck,

hi, go underneath and count how many ribs on your current gearbox...
3 rib gearbox will give you the best acceleration but it'll rev a bit harder on the highway
5 rib gearbox is a good match for the 1800 engine
6 rib gearbox will be slower off the mark but the engine will rev less on the highway (quieter and less fuel)

so it depends how you use your kombi ... I had a 2 litre engine with a 3 rib box and it was great around town (3 rib box needed a different input shaft, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch and starter motor)
