Advice and / or Coffs Area Mechanic - Little Yellow - 18-02-2024

Hi all.

Set off yesterday on the first day of a planned couple of weeks up in Northern NSW.  Made it from our home (Sydney) to a friend's at Sandy Beach (Coffs Harbour) yesterday - 550km.  No trouble at all until we were about 30km from our destination when we started missing or jumping a bit, typically rolling on the power to get up a hill.

Power seems down quite a bit down, still able to cruise at 90-100kph on the flat on a light throttle with no apparent issue, but instantly starts to cough and jump when rolling the power on to get up an incline.  The miss / cough is usually accompanied by a "bop" noise from the exhaust.  No other unusual noises, but its pretty bad when it starts to happen.
The problem didn't seem to come on gradually - all was fine - until suddenly it wasn't.

Since the rest of our trip needs about another 1000km of driving things aren't looking so good...

Any thoughts on what the issue might be?
How much damage am I doing by driving it further?
Anyone recommendations for an aircooled mechanic in/near Coffs or Woolgoolga area?  Or Byron/Lennox Head if we're daft enough to try and push on...

Many thanks,
Phil

What motor?

Can you do a basic tune up?
Could be simple like points closed up or vac advance pipe fallen off or blocked idle jet

Thank you Barry.
Much appreciated.
Will give him a call tomorrow.

1974 T2 1800 everything original spec.

Vac advance pipe is in place.

Could be points of a blocked jet, but sadly not got the skills to do a basic tune up.  Need to up my game!  - maintained regularly by a reputable Sydney mechanic.

Have you checked the fuel filter ?
Look for signs of water in the filter ……..
If water is present, change out the filter….you do have a spare on board, don’t you….? Tongue
Then Chuck a litre of metho in the tank and fill up.
Metho will absorb the water and then burn off in combustion.

1800 doesn't have a fuel filter. Just the strainer in the tank. Metho might be worth a try. Could be fuel starvation. Points closing up could be a possibility. Was any work done just prior to your trip?

Was thinking that an inline, aftermarket filter may have been installed…….

RE: Advice and / or Coffs Area Mechanic - Little Yellow - 19-02-2024

Thank you for the suggestion Mark.
It does have an aftermarket fuel filter, changed not too long ago, and completely clear. No droplets or globules of water showing.
I checked, cleaned up and re-gapped the points, but no improvement.
Taking it to see Garry Moody in Bellingen tomorrow morning - off a good recommendation. Fingers crossed for something fairly straightforward!

Hope it’s something simple…….usually is.
I’ve seen the points cable breakdown before……runs fine when cool but as the engine warms up, the heat creates resistance in the remaining strands, causing a stutter/hesitation under load.
Could just need a points swap out…..same happens with ht leads. Dizzy cap carbon post can be a culprit too…
