Old style Indicator arm not 'locking' - Pabloako - 04-01-2023

Hi everyone,

Another curveball from Daisy the 1972 low light.  She seems to have a very early indicator arm and mechanism and I have given it a good clean up (you probably won't believe me when you see the pictures, but it is much cleaner than it was before) and I believe these were also used in split screen busses too.
The issue I have is that turning left is fine and I push the lever down and it locks in to place every time.  If I push it up to turn right, it doesn't lock and automatically returns back to the centre again.  Upon giving it a good clean, it did loosely lock in place, but as soon as I put the steering column back together, it  started to not lock again.

Does anyone know if these mechanisms can be adjusted or tightened up in anyway?  My poor old eyes aren't heling me either!

Centre Position

Left Position - Locking Perfectly

Right Position - Not locking in place and returning back to centre

If it's got 5 wires it a 72 version most likely from overseas, or unless a 72 deluxe kombi had them but didn't think Australian 72 did.
I’ve got a 72 5 wire one here I'll take some photos of it tomorrow and see if there is any difference to yours.
Don't think you can adjust any thing on them ,it may be worn out or broken, Can see any signs of either?

Hi Wayne and thanks for your reply.  Yes, it has 5 wires.
I can't see anything broken and both sides pretty much look symmetrical.  Something must have worne out, but I can't see anything obvious.

JK have them available for $300 but they are currently on back order.

Would be worth calling Kai after the 11th when they reopen for 2023.
Kai is a very knowledgeable and valued member here and will advise you accordingly.

Thank you.  Mick Motors seem to have them too. https://www.mickmotors.com.au/product-indicator-switch-ty2-68-72-german-quality-14092.aspx
I will take apart what I can of the existing one today and give it a good clean and if I don't have any luck I contact a few places.

Its a lovely little mechanism of small moving parts

They are two different units…… Wink same wiring, different hardware…..
The JK unit has the paddle style stalk, the MM the tapered barrel type
Just sayin’

by the looks of your springs, your right hand return spring is shorter than your left hand return spring so is already under tension even in the neutral position

Good eyes Patrick….. Cool
Century Springs make a range of products…….and they are readily available at Mitre 10 and other hardware stores.
I’ve used them for throttle return springs……

Good pick up.  There is also some pretty dodgy soldering on the unit too, so someone must have attacked it in the past to fix an issue, or even this issue
