1975 Kombi Removing old heater cables - baliboy.schroeder - 02-04-2024

Hi All,
I cannot pull out the old heater cables, left or right.

They seem to be caught . All the caps/ ends are off nothing obvious is holding it back. Been on YOUTUBE there is no procedure i have missed. I am pulling the cables towards the front of the van..but nothing.

I have a feeling now that I am stretching one of the cables as one is now much longer but the back end is still there. The actual wire I think canbe slipped out but that leaves the cable outer casing stuck in the tubes.

Am I missing something ?

As an alternative i  may need to abandon the tube and run and attach the new cables along the outside of the tubes ?

Any ideas would be appreciated

Regards Klaus

Thanks Barry, interesting reading.

My cables have now stretched, so I might need to do as others, just keep pulling stretching the outer shroud and put up with meters of wire.

Hopefully not breaking, the shrinkage within will finally give way and come out.

However , I was thinking of sliding the inner wire out first to give more room so the outer shroud could shrink further , that's my theory ?

What are your thoughts...leave wire in ?  or out ?

Klaus

Your attachments were perfect for the job. Both cables are out. I had trouble with the left side, the shroud kept stretching until no more. It was hard pulling but it finally gave way. The right side stretched a little initially but gave way as a complete unit. Both were rusty mid way, so assuming the rust was the problem holding back.

It was suppose to be a simple task for the day ....it took all day. And now for the new cables !!

Thanks again for your assistance.

Much appreciated.

I did like the suggestion in Barry’s link, of just tying them to something secure, like a lamp post, and then driving the Kombi away from it!Big Grin

Saves all that manual pulling & swearing effort……… Cool

In my experience, everything that should be an easy job takes longer than you expect.....it's a kombi !!
