Number Plates - Melissa - 06-07-2023

My mum has had this number plate since you could first get them - I don't remember the exact year but it would have been early 80's. She has decided it could be the time to part with them. The question is - how do you sell them? I know you never actually own them - I think they are about $600 per year on top of the rego so they are not cheap - is the easiest way to sell the car with them? This is for NSW.

In NSW I’m pretty sure you can’t sell the plates.
You need to sell the car with the plates attached.
If the plates are really sort after, you need to attach them to a sh!t box and sell that

Thats what I was thinking - maybe she should get it wrapped pink and put big dollars on it?

Now ya thinking

There is a pink Barbie New Beetle where I park in Ultimo.

Now I’m confused. It’s been more than 35 years, since I had a NSW registered vehicle. When I did, I had my initials, with 3 digits, on black with white lettering type plates, but that was just a one off fee. I had to surrender them, when I no longer had a vehicle with NSW rego, to keep them on….

Are non standard plates like those, a “rental fee” per year, for the privilege of wearing them, without ownership?  Confused

NSW sucks for custom plates.

Unless you get the standard issue - everything costs

Ranges from $120 - $500 additional per year

So if I wanted to get my initials "BA 123" that is an additional $121 / yr

But if I read it correctly, one can sell plates in NSW by transferring "The Right to Display" to another registered owner in NSW. And yes, fees will apply but payable by the new owner.

Best bet is to approach a Service NSW service centre.

+1
There appears to be some ability to sell in NSW.
A Google search found several companies who advertise them for you.
See PL8Sales for this explanation:

If I sell my car, can I keep the plates?
Yes, when you buy personalised plates or custom plates, they become yours for life (or until you sell them). You can transfer these plates to a new vehicle but (sic) filling out a form at the Transport for NSW service centre. When you got your special plates, your old plates were probably cancelled. So, you'll need to get some new standard-issue plates before transferring ownership of your car.

Note that I have never used PL8Sales and therefore cannot recommend them.
