Engine bay - Mark D - 04-02-2023

Hi everyone,
Starting to do a bit of a tidy up in the engine bay of my '72 lowlight...fuel tank breather hoses etc. and I'd like to replace the heat shielding on top of the bay, but I'm little confused by the fasteners holding it up. What exactly are these things? some sort of pop rivet?

And is this material available anywhere? Also, does anyone know where I can source this cover?

Thanks for any help,

                                        Mark

On my 1971 Kombi this perforated sheet above the engine was held up by large aluminum rivets. I had to drill the rivets out to remove the sheet.
When I replaced it, I used suitable gauge screws and large washers.

I found a couple of UK based suppliers that had replacement covers - but they are not cheap.

I think your 1972 Kombi has a larger engine bay configuration to my 1971 model  - not sure if the roof cover sheets are the same ?

I was able to make repairs to my original perforated sheet and reuse it. I replaced the insulation above the cover and installed a BlazCut fire suppression tube below it.

No help on the side cover ..sorry!

Thanks mate, I thought I might have to drill them out. The original covers are still good (unless I ruin them getting them out.....) I just thought I'd give them a coat of paint and replace the insulation. What material did you use?  And that fire suppression system sounds like a bloody good idea.

RE: Engine bay - Doob - 04-02-2023

At the time there was a lot of building construction work going on around my place. I spoke to several of the builders about insulation materials - with regard to fire resistance, durability. and insulation rating. They were more than happy to give me large offcuts - way more than I needed for the engine bay roof. I selected one with an aluminum foil backing, that would pass my blow-touch nonflammable test - and as thick as I could comfortable fit in the cavity above the cover.  Not sure of the brand name or R rating but it was just a good quality domestic foil backed insulation. I installed it with the foil side down toward the engine bay - to stop engine grime getting into the insulating material.
If I was doing it again I might consider using a automotive specific noise suppression & insulation material - as offered by Car Builders or Dynamat etc...

The foil-backed you mention might be the go I think for the engine bay. The dynamat looks like it might be good for the roof.....I was even thinking about lining the inside of the panels with something like that. As for the floors, I was considering a spray-on sound deadener as I've had problems before with moisture under mats rotting out the floor....don't know if it's a good idea or not.... Thanks for the help

I've got a side cover off a '76 ... if the '72 hole is 190mm then it'd be the same

RE: Engine bay - Wayne Murray - 05-02-2023

The perforated panel above the engine bay in a 72 should be metal. So a good clean and repaint and you can reuse it. The insulation underneath should also be reusable. How effective the old insulation is I don’t know. Adding a little extra insulation like dynamat wouldn’t hurt at all.
Other panels above engine in other years was made more out of a Masonite style board and most look worse for ware after 50 years, if they are still on the car. Earlier bay panels above engine is also a different shape as in72 the engine bay changed shape.

It‘s the same size.

Good one mate, that looks like the one. Interested in selling? Problem is though, I'm way up in Mackay...

Mine's made of metal, so a clean-up and coat of paint should do the trick. The insulation above though appears to be wrapped in some sort of cellophane (from what I can see through the perforations) and looks to be burnt or blackened in some places which is why I'm thinking of replacing it. Didn't get around to pulling it out this weekend as I'm moving house, and I'm scared to think how many kombi pieces are going to get lost in the move.......
