T3 Fuel pumps - Barry - 15-08-2022

Lost another fuel pump on the weekend.
Was out camping and drove about 50km on muddy, pot hole'd, flooded roads.
Buzzing away now.

It's been 2 years since this one was put in.
Need to see if I am getting water in there again.
The tank was checked last time.
It had new seals put everywhere and they are all good.
Added a pre-filter as well.

It's not surging like last time when I had the water issue.
Just buzzing.

I have a big road trip in a months time - so will be doing the fuel pump and filter (again)

Well - got my bus back.
Turns out the grommets were missing from the breather tanks.
I had picked up a load of water and mud when I went through the creeks last camping trip.

Anyway, it's back on the road and we have a road trip coming up.

It's nice when a definite cause is found which is easy fixed :-)

95% of the vans I have parted have the grommets in the rollover tanks either completely missing or in very poor shape.  This is a job Im yet to do on the DOKA but have the grommets ready.

They are such a shit of a job to fit and keep in place when trying to reinstall the tank - they easily pull out and then leak when you fill the tank.

Yep, but easily identified by the dripping fuel under the vehicle after filling, as you return from paying at the counter.  Wink

Well - what an effort that was.

While away on the road trip it started making noises again.
Got into Mel’burg at peak hour and “stopped”
Started again - so drove off.
Luckily I took a spare pump and filter with me.
Across the Straight to Devonport and went the back roads to Hobart.
50km out of Hobart and noises again and flat spots.
Got to a tiny town and …… stopped.

Wife just looks at me - “really?”

Luckily we were outside a servo so filled up and drove off easily.

Concerned, I rang my mechanic and he reckons there is still some crap in the tank.
So I just filled up at 200kms instead of 400kms.

Rest of the trip it ran like a dream.

Ordered a new tank while away and it was waiting for me when I got home.

They come in primer, so gave it a nice coat of Brunswick Green metal paint and asked mechanic to fit.
Also a noise to check at the front.

First issue - front left wheel bearing on the way out.
Probably from the river crossing and water getting in through the speedo cable hole.

Next - bloody tank has an 8mm outlet not 12mm.
Ring MM and ask WTF and it’s “apparently” the only one you can get.
Everything else was correct for a 2.1L - so not a 1.9L or diesel?
Says they have sold heaps and you just need a T2 FI filter as a step.

Next - noise coming from the back. Cat on the way out.

Finally get it back and it’s running like a pig.
Black exhaust pouring out and stalling all over the place.

Back to mechanic and seems T2 sensor didn’t want to play nice.
New one in

So……… just picked up and been for a drive.
No smoke and no stalling.

Fingers crossed.
